Survey Results – Healthcare Workers, Do you Feel Safe?

This is a survey for health care workers (HCW), first responders, and anyone working on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey first began on April 11, 2020 to gain a better understanding of the needs of the people across Hawai’i who are taking the lead in battling the virus.

Below are the results from HCW, providers, and first responders across the islands. If you have not yet responded to the survey, we encourage you to do so which will allow us to better inform others of the needs of HCW and providers to make our working environment a safer place.

Question 1 – Do you feel safe working at your facility with the current PPE policy?

X2 = 36.75, df = 1, p-value << 0 .001

There was a significant difference in the answer of health care workers were the majority of individuals said they do NOT feel safe working in their current place of employment with current PPE policies.

Question 2 - Do you feel that your choice of PPE is being supported and approved by your workplace?

X2 = 4.19, df = 1, p-value = 0.04

We found a significant difference where the majority of people do NOT feel that their choice of PPE is being supported and approved by their workplace.

Question 3 - Are you allowed to wear your own PPE if it is a higher level protection PPE than the facility provides?

X2 = 24.01, df = 1, p-value < 0 .001

There was a significant difference where most HCW said they are NOT allowed to wear their own PPE even when it is higher level protection than the ones provided by their place of employment.

Question 4 - Are you concerned with the possibility of insufficient PPE leading to general patients’ contracting COVID-19?

X2 = 233.13, df = 1, p-value << 0 .001

This is one of our strongest results and it shows that the vast majority of HCW are concerned about the possibility of insufficient PPE which can lead to general patients contracting COVID-19.

Question 5 - Are there any procedures at your workplace that you believe pose a high or unjustifiable risk of infection, either to you or cross infection to another patient?

X2 = 9.41, df = 1, p-value = 0.002

A significant amount of HCW felt that there are procedures in their workplace that pose high risk of infection to both themselves and other patients.

Question 6 - Do you feel that there are administrators who are keeping you or your colleagues from following your facility’s PPE policy?

X2 = 40.39, df = 1, p-value << 0.001

A significant amount of HCW did NOT feel hindered by administrators when following PPE policies that are in place. This means that for the most part, administrators are being helpful in terms of HCW following PPE policy.

Question 7 - Do you wish to be tested for Covid-19?

X2 = 13.02, df = 1, p-value = 0.003

A majority of HCW feel the need to be tested for COVID-19.

Question 8 - Have you been denied testing of Covid-19?

X2 = 263.47, df = 1, p-value << 0.001

It appears that the vast majority of HCW have access or are able to be tested for COVID-19, however, almost 50 people documented being denied testing.

Question 9 - Do you feel there are barriers to getting tested for Covid-19 as a HCW?

X2 = 27.06, df = 1, p-value < 0.001

A significant amount of HCW feel that there are barriers to getting tested, many documented that testing is only being done if symptoms are present in an individual.

Question 10 - If not already in place, would you like to have access to facilities to sanitize yourself (eg shower) or your garments worn in a medical setting before departing from your workplace?

X2 = 181.37, df = 1, p-value << 0.001

Again, this is one of the strongest results in the survey with an overwhelming amount of HCW saying that they would like to have a place to either shower or get their garments cleaned before leaving work.

Question 11 - Do you feel supported in obtaining a place to sleep, away from your family, if you are concerned about Covid-19 infection and transmission?

X2 = 1.83, df = 1, p-value = 0.17

We found no difference between the answers meaning that about half of HCW have a place to stay if they feel they were infected while the other half do NOT have an alternative place to stay (aside from their family) if they were to be exposed to COVID-19.

Maui Specific Results

Question 1 - Do you feel safe working at your facility with the current PPE policy?

The majority of people report not feeling safe at work with the current PPE policy

Question 2 - Do you feel that your choice of PPE is being supported and approved by your workplace?

The majority of people do not feel like their workplace support nor approves of their choice of PPE

Question 3 - Are you allowed to wear your own PPE if it is a higher level protection PPE than the facility provides?

A significant amount of people report that they are allowed to wear their own PPE

Question 4 - Are you concerned with the possibility of insufficient PPE leading to general patients’ contracting COVID-19?

A significant amount of people report that they are concerned there will be insufficient PPE

The majority of people believe there are procedures in the workplace that pose a high risk of infection or cross infection to another patient.

Question 6 - Do you feel that there are administrators who are keeping you or your colleagues from following your facility’s PPE policy?

We found no difference meaning that close to half of HCW believe that administrators are keeping workers from following PPE policy while the other half do no.

A significant amount of workers wish to be tested to COVID-19

Question 8 - Have you been denied testing of Covid-19?

The majority of people report NOT being denied testing for COVID-19

A majority report that there are barriers to being tested for COVID-19

A significant amount of people say they would like place to sanitize themselves or their garments before leaving their workplace.

Question 11 - Do you feel supported in obtaining a place to sleep, away from your family, if you are concerned about Covid-19 infection and transmission?

About half respond having an alternative place to sleep if they are concerned about transmitting COVID-19 while the other half report NOT having an alternative place to sleep.
